Palazzo del Principe Foresto in Modena Undergoes Sustainable Conversion with BIM Technology : 02.10.2023

Politecnica and Studio IT’S have been awarded the contract for the sustainable conversion of the historic "Palazzo delle Finanze" in Modena. This monumental complex, spanning over 11,000 square meters and dating back to the Middle Ages, is set to undergo a significant urban transformation. The consortium, led by Politecnica Ingegneria ed Architettura in partnership with Studio IT’S, Studio Calvi, Ingegneri Riuniti, Studio Mattioli – Antonio Paone, and MR Energy Systems, has been entrusted by the Agenzia del Demanio to revitalize and restructure the Palazzo delle Finanze, a historic complex located in the city's historic center.

The Palazzo's redevelopment is a pivotal project for preserving Modena's rich historical and cultural heritage while enhancing the city's urban quality. The project focuses on reimagining the two inner courtyards, aiming to reinterpret their axis and reconnect the Palazzo with the city's historic streets and open spaces. "This project represents an opportunity to reintegrate the building into the city's life by creating new public spaces, pedestrian pathways, access points, and inner courtyards that can be enjoyed by the community," says Micaela Goldoni, the coordinator of Politecnica's design team. "It's a sustainable urban transformation that aims to provide fresh shared space potential to the building, enhancing its façade's visibility."

The successful transformation of the historic "Palazzo delle Finanze" in Modena underscores the invaluable advantages of utilizing BIM technology. This powerful platform facilitated seamless collaboration among the project's multidisciplinary team, enhancing efficiency and accuracy throughout the design and construction phases. Navisworks, employed for clash detection, played a pivotal role in identifying and resolving potential conflicts early on, minimizing costly rework and ensuring a smoother construction process. Additionally, the utilization of Model Checker to validate hundreds of parameters across all models ensured a high level of precision and consistency, guaranteeing that the project adhered to stringent quality standards. These innovative tools not only streamlined the project's workflow but also contributed to the preservation of Modena's historical and architectural heritage while promoting sustainable urban development.
